Hope and Glory

Apparently, I'm all about the lace these days. A couple weeks ago I featured some saucy lace tights from HauteLegs. And while I thought it might look a bit nutty to pair the lace leggings with my new lace H&M dress (also, $20, wtf?!), my third pair of HauteLegs went just right with this hot pink number. With a blue seam up the back, these tights reminded me of a scene from the movie Hope and Glory. In it, a girl has her little brother draw a stocking seam up her leg with a marker. I remember watching that scene and thinking how silly it was that she wanted to draw in a seam to pretend she had stockings on, rather than just go bare-legged. But now I kinda get it. There's something sweet and sassy about the seam, and I'm diggin it.

Fashion-spiration ~ Stylish business casual

Apr 24, 2013

stylish business casual
I haven't done a fashion-spiration post in a while, but I just spent some time last weekend going through my closet and picking out outfits for a conference in Vegas (which I'm currently at). Whenever I pick out businessy (yes, I just made that word up) outfits, I always end up trying a ton of different combos—tops, blazers, skirts, pants, heels...good lord, us ladies have a lot to think about. Since I work in a casual office and can wear jeans every day (thank goodness) getting dressed up for the conference has actually been really fun! I'm a fan of pencil skirts and blouses. Word to the wise: When trying this combo, make sure the pieces aren't too tight. It can take you to va-va-voom pretty quick. Hot for date night. Awkward for biz meetings.

This week I had the fun opportunity to taste test Silk's Iced Lattes and Soy Milk. The challenge was to write a post that creatively described Silk's flavors. So, I threw on this silky, slinky dress and twirled around in the crazy SF wind we've been having for effect. Just like this dress, Silk's iced lattes and soy milk are silky smooth, rich and delicious. The chocolate Silk soy milk totally satisfied my usual evening sweet tooth—pretty much tastes like a yummy glass of chocolate milk, but with a bonus: it's healthier. And I'm thinking about replacing my coffee habit with a glass of Silk's iced latte. I'll probably have more luck with that than I did when I tried to switch coffee for green tea (yeah, not happening), and it's a lot less cals than my usual cup of joe (I like cream. And sugar. A lot.). And it's yummy. So, sounds like a win-win!

Thanks to Silk for sponsoring this post!

pray for boston
I was shocked and saddened to hear about the bombings in Boston today. Definitely breathed a sigh of relief when I heard my best friend and her boyfriend were ok. My heart goes out to everyone there.

I wore this outfit last weekend for a date night with the beau. It was our 8 year anniversary! Hard to believe it's been that long. As my BFF Nicole says, "Your relationship is the same age as a 3rd grade child." Ha! We got dressed up and went out for an amazing dinner at Park Tavern, in North Beach. Pretty sure I am the luckiest girl alive...

Anyways, enough with the mushy stuff! :) How hot are these lacy tights from HauteLegs?? I can't decide which pair I'm more in love with—these or the ones from last week. To say I'm obsessed would be putting it mildly. You can check out their tights subscription service here!

I'm super excited about this purple leather croco envelope clutch from JJ Winters! Apparently it's a fav of Blake Lively's, and I can see why. AND this clutch was an original style worn in Gossip Girl. It's a perfect accessory for going out at night, but it's also roomy enough to use during the day too. Somehow its simultaneously funky enough to add a pop yet subtle enough to be classy for day-wear. Awesome. And looks like Vanessa Hudgens is also a big fan of their handbags. I can dig it.

You can shop other looks worn on your favorite TV shows at GetThis.TV. And soon, you'll be able to do it on their mobile app while you're gettin your TV on. Scandal with Kerry Washington is the next show they're adding looks from. Fun!

Hash brown casserole recipe

Apr 9, 2013

hash brown casserole recipe

For my boyfriend's birthday weekend, I started us off with a homemade birthday brunch. This hash brown casserole recipe was super easy to make and SO yummy. It's a Paula Deen recipe from The Food Network.

3 tablespoons butter
1 small yellow onion, chopped
4 cups frozen shredded hash browns
1 pound bulk sausage, mild, hot or sage
2 1/4 cups whole milk
8 large eggs
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
8 cups cubed French or Italian bread, crusts removed
2 cups (1/2 pound) grated cheddar
2 cups (1/2 pound) freshly grated parmesan

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Spray a deep 13 by 9-inch casserole dish with vegetable oil cooking spray.

Melt butter in a large frying pan. Add the onion and saute over medium-low heat until soft, about 5 minutes Add the hash browns and break apart. Saute until soft, about 5 minutes.

In a second frying pan, saute the sausage, breaking apart large clumps. When the sausage is cooked through, remove it from pan.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the milk eggs, salt, pepper, nutmeg and mustard, briskly to blend.

To assemble, spread the onions and hash browns evenly at the bottom of the greased dish. Place the bread cubes evenly on top of hash browns. With a slotted spoon distribute sausage as the third layer. Pour the milk and egg mixture over these layers. Add parmesan as the next layer, while then adding the cheddar.

Save a few tablespoons of cheddar for the last 10 minutes of baking, and add a fresh topping of melted cheddar.

Bake the casserole, uncovered for 45 to 50 minutes, until puffed and golden brown.

Belt ~ Boutique on Melrose
Shoes ~ DSW
Bronze Ring ~ Oana Mirela
Cocktail ring ~ Forever 21
Purple Ring ~ Tofa candle
Nail polish color ~ Red Carpet Manicure, Violetta Darling

While this outfit was arguably a little too sexy for Easter Sunday, I wore it anyways! This asymmetrical sweater dress from LeMuse is wool, so it's super warm and comfy, and I love how the material falls and folds. It just makes it look so effortlessly chic. You can get one here! Btw, I love their video on their home page. So cute. Makes me want tea and crumpets on a rainy day while wearing my new wool sweater dress.

The sassy tights are from HauteLegs. I met Monica, the founder, at SF FashionTech Week, and love her platform. It's a subscription and you log in and take a style quiz, and based on that quiz you're sent 3 (or 2, if you'd prefer) pairs of tights each month. As we all know, your favorite pair of tights will eventually rip and snag. But at least with HauteLegs, you know you have more tights coming each month! And it's fun to get a surprise in the mail each month—you don't know exactly which tights you'll receive, just that they'll match your personal style. I received 2 other super cute pairs from HauteLegs, so be on the look out for more posts with them over the next couple weeks!

It's a classic

Look closely at this top, and all of a sudden you're reading part of The Great Gatsby. This screen printed tee is made up entirely of text from the classic novel! Litographs.com let me pick out a top, and I had so much fun perusing their selection of tees and posters.

I'm also loving these shoes from Burnetie! They're actually high tops, and they're my first pair ever. You can get the same pair here. Since the pair is called High Top Vintage, I thought they fit in well with the theme of this outfit—a classic. They're super comfy and cute, and I can't wait to wear them when I need to walk a lot but still want to add something fun to my look (a.k.a. when I'm walking a ton in China next month!).

The Bar Book I grabbed from the kitchen at our office to go with the classic, vintage theme. And no, I don't find it unusual that we have a Bar Book in our office kitchen.

And how pretty is this poster from Litographs.com?? It's made up of the text of Emma, by Jane Austen. You can get one here. Their posters have a sticky back on them so you can slap them up wherever you want, but I love this one so much I bought a frame to put it in. It's going over my dresser that holds all my jewelry for a lovely, feminine touch.
