Quick and easy Broccoli Asparagus soup

Jan 29, 2014

asparagus soup

The weather in San Francisco has been a bit indecisive lately (what else is new), and on chilly nights I've been craving some yummy soups. I put together this recipe, based off some recommendations from a friend and a couple quick Google searches. It's easy and yummy—my favorite combo when it comes to recipes!

1 chopped onion
2 tbsp butter
2 cups chopped broccoli
1 lb bunch asparagus (chopped)
1 quart chicken broth
1 tsp dried thyme
1 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

1. In a dutch oven or large pot, heat the butter on a medium-high stove. Add the chopped onion and sauté for about 5 minutes.

2. Add the broccoli and asparagus to the pot and sauté for 5 minutes. Add the chicken broth and let the veggies steam for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove pot from heat when vegetables are tender (you should be able to easily stick a fork in them—they're done!).

3. If you have an emersion blender, use this to blend all the ingredients in the pot. If you don't have an emersion blender, transfer ingredients from the pot to a regular blender (you may have to do this in two batches, depending on the size of your blender). Blend until smooth.

4. If you've used a regular blender, transfer puree back to the pot. Add thyme and cayenne pepper and whipping cream. (The whipping cream is optional. I like a little extra cream in my soup, so I added just a half cup.) Give your soup one final stir and enjoy!

Hi friends! Today's post includes an outfit worn to a blogger friend's birthday brunch at Jones, and some snaps from playing around on the new fashion app, Chic-Finder

There's something really chic about a slouchy tee tucked into high-waisted pants. I never thought I could pull off high-waisted pants, but I tried these on on a whim and loved them! It's been fun looking at the tops in my closet with an eye towards pairings that will work with these new pants.

So, let's talk about Chic-Finder! I always love trying out new fashion apps because I feel like the combination of style + tech is very San Francisco. Chic-Finder just recently launched on the app store, and it's great for finding new trends. My favorite part about the app is that it makes it super easy to find similar styles and pieces you've seen on celebs and loved. Love Kate Middleton's dress (silly question—I mean who doesn't, really?)? Just upload a photo of Kate in her frock and Chic-Finder will do the rest to find similar dresses.

Since I run with a pretty fashionable crowd, sometimes it can be tough to nail down where my friends' pieces are from ("Oh, this old thing? I picked it up in a little boutique in Barcelona."), which makes it hard to find a piece similar to the one they're wearing and that I'm inspired by. So at our blogger brunch, I played around with the similar style feature using my friend Keily's dress as inspiration.

What a hottie! I love this dress, and I want to find a few options that are similar...

So I snap a photo of Keily and upload it to Chic-Finder...

And voila! Dresses with very similar prints pop right up!

It's sort of like fashion magic. Which happens to be my favorite kind of magic. I can't wait to try it with some of my favorite celebrity style crushes—Heidi, I'm lookin at you.

LA warehouse fashion shoot

Jan 23, 2014

Last summer I shared a series of outfit posts from shoots in Nicole's warehouse, located in the Fashion District of LA. In fact, one of my favorite outfit shoots ever came from one of my LA visits with her.

Nicole—talented and creative videographer/photographer that she is—recently made a fun video from the footage and shots of one of our photoshoot days. Our friend Allison also joined in on the photoshoot fun. I love this video that Nicole made, not just because it's fun and sweet, but because I'll treasure it forever. I mean really, how often do you get to do a fashion shoot in a beautiful LA warehouse with two of your bestest friends in the whole wide world?

You can see the full looks that Nicole shot here and here

You know what I miss about the holidays? Besides the family time and food of course, I miss throwing tons of sparkle into my look just for the heck of it. Here's a fun holiday/New Years look, with a little bit of edge thanks to these funky tights. My sister shot this outfit for me at our parents' house, complete with large ornaments hanging on the trees in the front yard. How cute is my mom and her holiday decorating?

Hog Island + Grilled Oysters Recipe

Jan 15, 2014

A couple months ago we took a trip up to Hog Island Oyster Farm to enjoy a beautiful day with family, oysters and beer. The Farm is about an hour and a half drive north of San Francisco, and it's a wonderful way to spend a Saturday afternoon. You learn how to shuck your own oysters, and there's something really satisfying about slurping them up after you've put in the work to shuck them yourself. Raw or grilled, they're delicious. Here's the outfit post from our day of oyster shucking, and here are a few more snaps, along with a delicious horseradish sauce recipe for grilled oysters!

Horseradish Butter for Grilled Oysters

8 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
2tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 1/2 tsp freshly grated lemon zest
1 tsp chopped fresh thyme
1tsp prepared horseradish
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Combine first 6  ingredients until smooth in a food process, with an electric mixer, or by hand. Add salt and pepper to taste.

For the oysters, grill over high heat (cupped side down, so juices don't spill) for 5 minutes until they pop open. Remove oysters from grill as they pop open, and after 10 minutes remove all of them even if they haven't popped. Shuck them (use a towel or oven mitt to protect hands from heat) and use the knife to scoop under the oyster and cut the bottom muscle. Add a teaspoon of the horseradish butter on top of each oyster and place back on the grill for a minute, until butter begins to melt. Remove from the grill and knock that sucker back! My mouth is watering just thinking about them...

Complementary colors compliment each other for a reason, but I've never known how to mix red and green without looking like Christmas. With this outfit, I've figured it out by chance—the Banana jacket and Rebecca Minkoff bag (thanks to SNOBSWAP! You can read more about them here.) are two of the newest additions to my closet, and I wondered if I could pair them together. So I found that the key is not to use the traditional color wheel red and green that = Christmas. The olive green jacket and red bag with just a hit of orange play off each other nicely, without making it look like I just really miss the holidays.

Friday Favs + Jabra Solemate Giveaway!

Jan 10, 2014

Just sharing a few things that are making me smile this week. Happy Friday everyone, and be sure to scroll down for a giveaway for your own Jabra Solemate wireless speaker ($150 value)!

The beau and I finally packed away all the Christmas decorations this week (although I was tempted to leave the lights surrounding our bay window up because they were just so darn cozy and festive). These little angels are from my cousin's Christmas Eve parties. They each have dates written on them from the year of that angel's party, going back to the early nineties.

Our idea of a perfect Sunday: Making brunch together, snuggling, reading and blogging. All with the perfect playlist in the background. Recently of course there were a lot of Christmas songs being played, but Songza's Bossa Nova playlist always gets us in a good mood. We love using our Jabra Solemate to play our tunes. This little wireless speaker packs a loud punch, and when Pandora ends up playing a song that's a miss, it's easy to change to the next one by tapping our phone, no matter where we are in the apartment. Perfect to bring to parties and get togethers. And Jabra wants to hook you up with your own Solemate too ($150 value)! Enter via the rafflecopter widget below (ends 1/16, and the more entry methods you participate in, the more chances you have to win!):

Kicked off the week with a juice cleanse from Pressed.

Halfway through Sandberg's Lean In and I'm really enjoying it. And yes, I read Are you smart enough to work at Google? when I was preparing for my interviews there. Apparently, I am! :-P

Thanks for stopping by, and have a fantastic weekend!

Ok, let's just take a minute to talk about these shoes! As soon as I pulled them out of the box and put them on, I didn't want to take them off. So I did the dishes in them since I wasn't going out that night. You may think I'm joking, but I'm not.

The leopard-accented heels are from SNOBSWAP, a new online boutique where you can swap, sell and shop beautiful designer pieces (with guaranteed authenticity). I thought I would just take a "peek" at their selection, and 45 minutes later I'm reminding myself that I started writing this blog post an hour ago. Whoops. These are my first pair of Christian Dior shoes, and I'm thinking SNOBSWAP will be my destination for finding Christian shoes of another kind as well. Did someone say Loubs up to 90% off??

Oh, and Oprah named them the best site to score deals on designer duds. No big deal.
