Spring ahead

Feb 26, 2014

retro spring outfit

Yay, spring is less than a month away! I have a vintage floral dress right out of my grandmother's closet that I'm dying to wear, but for now I'll stick to admiring this floral a-line number from Modcloth along with a few punches of retro glam like this amazing vintage diamond bracelet. Are we ready to spring ahead?

Nicole and I shot this outfit up at the Legion of Honor on a beautiful SF day. These are my first pair of Jimmy Choos (my dad loves to call them "Jimmy's Shoes") and I can't believe this is their first debut on the blog, because I've been pretty smitten with them the last few months. I love the lace, and they're shockingly comfortable. And, well, they're Jimmy's!

Happy Monday and hope you have a wonderful week!

How to throw an Oscars party

Feb 20, 2014

Are you guys watching The Oscar's this Sunday? Awards shows are a lot more fun when you're watching them with friends, so I've put together a few tips for hosting your own Oscar's viewing party at home!

The Invitation
A chic invite is easy to whip up with sites like Postmark and Punchbowl. In a day and age where people send our their Save The Dates electronically, it's perfectly fine to send an email invite for your party. If you want to be an over-achiever, you can also mail them through these sites. But I prefer the instant gratification of sending out an invite via email and getting responses right away from my overly-connected friends.

The Cocktails
Baileys has always been one of my favorite drinks. Possibly because I like my drinks to be disguised as desserts. And I love that whether you drink Baileys as-is over ice, or add a couple simple ingredients, it's delicious. For an Oscar's-inspired drink, you can easily make a Baileys Red Carpetini (cute, huh?) by mashing a few raspberries at the bottom of your glass, adding some ice, and pouring on the Baileys. Add a few raspberries to garnish and enjoy!

Another recipe from Baileys that sounds Oscar-worthy: the Glamour Shot
Add some fabulous to your evening with this decadent blend of Baileys Vanilla Cinnamon and pure gold leaf.
1 oz. Baileys Vanilla Cinnamon
0.5 oz. Goldschlager Cinnamon Schnapps Edible gold flakes (Optional; found at most baking stores)

Rim shot glass with gold flakes. Mix ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into a shot

This recipe contains no more than 0.6 fl oz. of alcohol per serving.

The Photo booth
Every party needs a good photo booth. What's the point of getting all dressed up if you're not going to have fun photos to look back on years from now? Photo booths don't need to be a long, drawn out DIY ordeal. Slap some decor on the wall and set up a camera with a tripod and you're good to go. Here's one I made for last New Year's, and here are a couple more for your inspiration...

The Dish-ware
Add even more gold and sparkle to the ambiance with adorable gold polka-dot Kate Spade plates and gold cutlery. Serve popcorn in gold bowls, and sprinkle some glittery coasters around for people to put their drinks on.

The Outfit
When I'm hosting, I like to wear dresses, because they're comfortable and keep me looking put together. Black and gold with lots of shimmer may be an obvious choice for an awards party, but add a few pops with a red lip and quirky rings, and you'll be in business. Just be sure to wear an apron while you're mashing those berries for your cocktail. ;)
Ok, I'm off to go watch a couple more of the nominated movies so I know what the heck is going on Sunday night! What other touches do you like to include when you're hosting an awards party?

Nicole and I shot these photos back in January. Yes, January. While the rest of the country was experiencing the Polar Vortex (which sounds like something my California-ass would not be able to handle), SF was enjoying some beach picnic-appropriate weather. We decided to take advantage and packed up a yummy spread for two to enjoy at Ocean Beach. The fog did start to roll in at the end of the day (this is San Francisco, after all), but we had a great time. Sand between my toes, salt in my hair—just the way I like it.

Coats at NYFW

Feb 16, 2014

New York Fashion Week has officially wrapped, but I'm still enjoying watching all the footage and outfits roll out on my favorite bloggers' sites and social media. I haven't attended a NYFW (yet!), but fortunately Glam.com keeps me in the loop on trends and behind-the-scenes happenings with their YouTube channel. It's the next best thing to being there in person. Clips from the actual runway shows are fun, but I also love seeing what all the fashionable attendees on the streets are wearing during Fashion Week. Here's a quick video by Glam showcasing some of their favorite winter coats...

Lands End Hike

Feb 13, 2014

A few shots from a hike I went on a few months ago up at Lands End. It was a beautiful day, and the views of the golden gate and the ocean are breath taking. Check it out if you're in the area!

Sometimes when you're mixing prints it helps to stay in the same color family. I put this mantra to use with this mustard yellow and black dress and leopard print flats. A brisk day up at Sutro Bath called for knee-high socks to go with the short, fit and flare dress.

Photos taken by Nicole Salmeri. Isn't she a genius with lighting? Love her.
