Loose waves

Aug 29, 2014

Oh heyy Friday before a long weekend! You're looking especially lovely. This week I've been trying out some new hair products that I'll be taking into the three day weekend with me. Head & Shoulders has a new Fresh Scent Technology Collection that includes a water-activated fragrance boost, and I got to try out the green apple scent. Heavenly! Beautiful hair has never smelled so good.

My hair naturally dries stick straight, but I was inspired by Sofia Vergara's amazing hair and decided to do a toned-down, loose wave version on myself. Here are four easy steps to loose waves:

1. Start with a clean and fresh foundation by using Head & Shoulders Shampoo and Conditioner. Because who doesn't love flake-free hair that smells amazing?
2. Blow dry hair and create volume on the sides and crown by lifting the hair with your fingers.
3. Comb hair back and then use the tip of the comb to part hair in the middle.
4. Curl hair away from the face using a 1 ½ inch curling iron. Let hair cool and comb through with fingers to loosen up waves.

Voila! Super easy. I'll be rocking my loose waves to a Bloody Mary bar brunch and to the horse races this weekend! Where will you be rocking your waves?

For a chance to meet Sofia Vergara herself, follow @HeadShoulders on Twitter and post a photo of your gorgeous, flake-free hair tagging #PartOfOurFamily #sweeps and @HeadShoulders. The sweepstakes kicks off Monday, August 18 and will run until September 1. Good luck!

Tackling the to-do list

Aug 26, 2014

This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group® and Sharpie, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #SharpieClearview http://my-disclosur.es/OBsstV

Last week I shared a few snaps of my home workspace and blogger editorial calendar, and today I'm sharing some more shots featuring how I tame my to-do list (fully caffeinated, of course!). I picked up some Sharpies from Walgreens and used them to make my list a little less daunting, and a little more pretty.

While I didn't necessarily mean to color coordinate my pens with my flowers, I kinda love that it happened!

These Sharpie Clearview Highlighters are kind of genius—you can see through them to actually see what you're highlighting! This would have been perfect for beautifying my highlighting jobs on my grad school textbooks, but for now I'll just have to use them to tickle my OCD fancy.

My to-do list for the weekend usually includes blog work and personal to-dos, but they both have to get done, so it all gets jotted down in my notebook in no particular order. To organize things a bit more visually, I used pink highlighter to mark the WTFab-related tasks, and yellow highlighter for personal errands. Nice-to-haves got a little orange asterisk next to them.

A to-do list tip: If you aren't marking some items on your list as a "nice-to-have" for that day, I totally recommend you do! I started doing this at my last job by the suggestion of a co-worker and even though it's a small mental shift, I found it made a big difference in my productivity (or at least my perceived productivity). There are certain things that just have to get done that day. And there will always be other things that would be great to get done that day, but if you don't, the world (and your world) will keep spinning. By marking the nice-to-haves, you tackle the must-haves first that day, and if there's time left over you can move on to the rest. And if you do get to the nice-to-haves, it feels like a little bonus, so you can pat yourself on the back and have a cookie. :)

Monday, we meet again. Yesterday I went wedding dress shopping for the first time with my mom, sister, and future mother-in-law. We had an absolute blast, as evidenced by this photo of my hilarious sister. I tried on a dozen dresses, and while we narrowed it down to two (gorgeous) top contenders, I didn't pull the trigger on one yet. With just over a year until the big day, I want to look around a bit more before I say yes to the dress!

On the other hand, this black dress from Banana was easy to say yes to. Not only is it a perfect transitional piece to take me from the end of summer to fall, it's also on sale. Done and done.

Wedding Wednesday: Guest Attire

Aug 20, 2014

With five out of the six weddings we're attending this year behind us, I've had plenty of opportunities to pick out wedding guest attire over the last few months. I think most weddings (or at least most weddings that I attend) are semi-formal attire rather than formal. Which is great, because it's an excuse to buy a new dress that I'll also wear for other events, rather than a gown that I'll never wear again. The lovely lace dress in today's outfit inspiration is from Review AustraliaEvery single one of their dresses would be lovely for a wedding, and something you could certainly wear for other occasions. They're so pretty and feminine (because hey, even though it's the bride's day, you want to look good too!) but not too flashy to cause eyebrow raises (you don't want to be the gal wearing a skin-tight red bandage dress with a plunging v-neck—true story from a friend's wedding). I also love Review Australia's floral skirtsthis one in particular has my name all over it. You can check out  more of Review Australia dresses online.

Pops of color

Aug 19, 2014

This post is part of a social shopper marketing insight campaign with Pollinate Media Group® and Sharpie, but all my opinions are my own. #pmedia #StaplesBTS http://my-disclosur.es/OBsstV

Today we're taking a little peek into my home workspace! I'm trying to be better about not blogging from the couch (or worse, the bed!) all the time and I used this post as a motivator to get our desk cleaned up so I can use it more for blogging.

Like most Pinterest addicts, I love organizing and I love color, so I picked up a couple different packs of Sharpies from Staples to help with the workspace update. I love using a giant desk calendar to manage my blog's editorial calendar, but I usually use a drab grey pencil. How boring! This month I spiced things up with some color and I love the results. I used different colored Sharpies to color-code all the categories I blog about and used the corresponding colors for the titles of this month's posts. If you're worried about the permanency of using Sharpies on your edit cal, you could also do this on sticky notes and move post titles around as needed.

I also swapped the usual blue ball point pen out for colorful Sharpies when writing out my To-Do list for the weekend. It's much more cheery than a standard list, don't you think?

If you're looking to get organized and add some pops of color to your workspace, you'll be happy to know that all Sharpie Fine and Ultra Fine assortment packs and Sharpie Neon Marker packs are currently on sale at Staples through August 24th (while supplies last)!

I'm so excited to share today's outfit post! It's got a little more ethnic flair than usual, no? ;) When my dear friend Raj from grad school got engaged a year ago my first thought was (of course) how excited I was for her. My second? "Omg this is going to make an awesome outfit post!" When I found out that it's customary at an Indian wedding to wear one outfit for the ceremony and change into another one for the reception, I was even more pumped. The wedding was amazing, the bride and groom looked incredible, and I ate enough butter chicken to feed a small village.

I also wanted to say a huge thank you to my lovely coworker and friend Sapna. When she heard I was going to an Indian wedding she got so excited for me that she brought me bags and bags of her beautiful jewelry from India so that I could play dress up in them. And she even gave me the beautiful black shoes that I'm wearing in the first outfit!

Banana Republic Friends and Family Sale

Aug 16, 2014

Yay Saturday! We're off to the SF Street Food Festival today and then doing some shopping at Banana. The Banana Republic Friends and Family Sale is one of my favorite sales, and it lasts through Sunday. At 40% off online, all of a sudden everything is just so affordable, it's hard to say no to their beautiful pieces! If you got a discount from someone who works at Banana, you're probably eyeing some Sloan skinnies too. Here are a few of my favorite picks.
